I am a proud meat eater…but there are lot of people looking for different options when it comes to getting that delicious meat flavour. Plant based meats have become extremely popular from fast food chains to your local grocery store. There has also been some major developments in lab grown beef.
Now you can add lab grown chicken to that list. Eat Just, a California food company is looking to take the live animals out of the food production chain.
The company started by making a plant based egg which has sold more than the equivalent of 100 million eggs proving that there is an appetite to alternative food production methods.
Next they decided to tackle the animal that usually makes those eggs although this time they didn’t want it to be plant based but actually animal based. That’s when they headed to the lab.
The process starts with a cell from a live chicken, a fresh piece of meat or the root of a feather. The cell is then fed nutrients and left to grow. The final product resembled minced meat and take around 14 days to create,
So far the lab grown chicken has been turned into Chicken Nuggets which are available to the public in Singapore including one restaurant for around $17.
Now they are looking to get their product approved for consumption around the world.
