As far as I am concerned a poutine HAS to have 3 things. Fries, gravy and cheese curds. Now I don’t mind if you put a little something something on top of it, pulled pork, bacon…more cheese.
According to the Top 5 from Canada’s Poutine Week these rules have been thrown out the window. More than 750 restaurants participated and these 5 were deemed the ‘best’ and I use that word very loosely.
A Quebec city offering from La Gaspésienne 51 was a mini burger with squid ink, snow crab and coleslaw on top of homemade fries, candied leeks, shellfish and cheese curds. I can’t eve say that sounds like a good burger let alone a good poutine.
Another offering out of Montreal consisted of fries, cheese curds, spicy cheddar sauce, kimchi, homemade sweet and sour sauce and chicken popcorn. Closer….but no gravy so that’s a no.
Back to Quebec City for a BBQ joint serving up poutine topped with brisket, bacon and wings. Okay this one I could get behinf
One of the only Top 5 not from Quebec comes from Manitoba. Fries covered with cheese curds and gravy then topped with potato cheddar perogies, sautéed onions, chives, bacon and sour cream.
And finally one I don’t think has any sort of place calling itself a poutine. Choux pastry-based fries topped with cream cheese balls, berries, chocolate sauce, raspberry sauce and whipped cream. Zero of the pountine elements should see it eliminated
