With Remembrance Day less than a month ago you will start seeing volunteers around the city selling poppies for the Royal Canadian Legion.
There will of course be some changes this year. Some you may expect like hand sanitizer stations and volunteers wearing masks but you also may notice something new, Tap enabled donation boxes.
The Legion has teamed up with HSBC Bank to create the boxes designed to increase safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Canadians can use the boxes by using a tap enabled credit card, phone or watch and placing it near the glowing poppy on the box. The tap will automatically take a $2 donation and then you can pick up your poppy. The donations will go towards helping Canadian veterans and their families.
This year will see 200 boxes rolled out around the country with the idea to produce more for years to come.
The Legion is also selling face masks this year for $10 which will also go towards veterans and their families.
Look for our local volunteers at Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, and the mall. If you are interested in volunteering this year you can call the legion at 403-527-7184.
