We all know climate change is a bad thing, but it could be even worse than you imagine with a possible global beer shortage which would dramatically affect Canada! As the planet heats up it could be harder to find a cool refreshing beverage or harder to afford one.
Increased heat and droughts are very bad news for barley to grow and no barley to brew is very bad news for beer lovers. How bad could it be? Globally beer production could drop by up to 16 percent. The news is even worse for us here in Canada.
As a beer loving country with a small population we would feel the impacts more. In a worst case scenario prices would increase by 50%. That’s not a typo FIFTY PERCENT.
There is some good news though. Thankfully this was more of an academic exercise BUT it could happen. The even better news is that because it could happen brewers are already looking into alternatives and solutions. So enjoy that brew with too much of a worry, heck why not have a second.
When we have three great breweries in town the only real worry might be hatters drinking them dry.
