Attention vegans..put down that delicious Avocado. They are not technically vegan and if that wasn’t bad enough the same can be said for almonds, kiwi, butternut squash and melons.
But why I hear you ask? Surely they have nothing to do with animals. Well they do if you are a super super strict vegan and base your dietary choices on the mistreatment of animals. The reasoning is similar to why some will not eat honey, it all has to do with the bees.
Because these foods are very difficult to grow naturally producers use a process called migratory beekeeping which involves trucking hives of bees across the country to help with pollination. Research has shown this travel can cause stress, illness and shorten the lifespan of the bees.
The news gets worse..broccoli, cherries, lettuce and cucumbers also use this method.
So there must be some good news. The UK Vegan Society has said that they do not agree with these claims saying “many forms of farming involve indirect harm to animals but it is unfortunately not possible or practicable to avoid the destruction of other animals in most farming at this time.”
Although I would argue that if you are willing to go without the deliciousness of a nice juice steak then you are probably okay missing out on avocado.
